The Nicest Thing (An Eddie’s Father Moment)

The nicest thing my youngest son has ever said to me? This is straight out of a Courtship Of Eddie’s Father espisode.

    He asked me today:

    “Dad, is parenting hard?”

It was a Yes or No question right? He didn’t ask me how I felt about parenting.

    So, I answered honestly:

    “Yes”

His reply (and I’ll never forget this one):

“Well, I’m trying to make it as easy as possible”.

  • The Pool Is Cool

Ok, I know it’s cheesy to blog song lyrics, but the lyrics from Daniel Amos’ “The Pool” have meant a lot to me over the years. So, there.

    The Pool

The pool is very deep and cool
and nothing here is hard to do
    Nothing that should trouble you

Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass this wanderer by
    Lakes that endlessly outspread
    Foamy blanket river beds

    I stand
    Stand by the water
    Knee deep
    Deep in the fountain
    Now down
    I go under
    Then rise up
    Rise up forever

The waves that mount and tumble high
    I meet the melancholy sky
And all I have I count for loss
There in the clouds one single cross

    Yes, deeply I have slept
And now I rise as one who has gone down
Into the well springs of new life
Down across the milk white sands
I wade out into the sleepy cove
And bathe in the holy stream
    Then suddenly

I shatter the level mirror of the lake

    Upon an everlasting tide
Into the silent pool I glide
I plunge to wash this black heart clean
And rise a swan upon the wing

  • Like I Was Telling (Fill In The Blank)…

I find it interesting how some people in conversation feel like they have to keep talking as if any silence whatsoever means they have lost.

Another thing I find interesting (and yes I’ve found myself doing it a time or two), is when people who instead of telling you things, its more about them regurgitating what they told someone else. In other words, most of what they say begins with:

“Like I was telling my brother the other day…”.

I especially love it when they can’t remember who they were telling, so it goes something like this:

“Like I was telling……….dang, who was that………….I was telling someone the other day….was that my cousin or my cousin’s husband….well anyway, I was telling SOMEONE the other day about….oh dang, I forgot what I was telling them…….what was that again………oh well nevermind.”

If I was on The Office, this is where I glance over at the camera and slightly raise my eyebrows.

  • Slurp…Is That Saint Peter Over There?

In my ongoing quest for the world’s best cup of coffee from home, this morning we retired the Bunn MyCafe. May she rest in peace.

The new gal is the Keurig Platinum Gourmet B70 K-Cup Brewer. After the first cup, I do think we may have found true, Coffee Heaven.

  • The Prosperity Gospel

According to Wikipedia, The Prosperity Gospel is defined:

Prosperity theology, also known as prosperity doctrine or the Prosperity Gospel, is the doctrine that prosperity, particularly financial prosperity, and success in business or personal life is external evidence of God’s favor. This favor may be preordained, or granted in return for efficacious prayer or merit-making.

I think John Piper hits the nail square on the head:

  • Impotent Uncle Sam

Congress passed the economic stimulus package, which was intended to raise the jumbo loan floor from $417,000 to $729,750. This is because government-chartered mortgage banks like Fannie Mae will only buy loans up to the current floor of $417,000.

This was supposed to boost the economy by:

    A) Making it easier for owners of more expensive homes to refinance,
    B) Allow buyers to rescue their homes out of foreclosure
    C) Encourage the purchase of more expensive homes (those needing mortgages over $417,000 would be able to get them without paying a ridiculous jumbo interest rate)

So the “stimulus” package passes Congress, raising the loan limit, but only in areas of the country where houses are highly priced.

If you live in California or Connecticut, congratulations. If you live in Ohio, you’re out of luck. In Ohio, only 1 county is considered “high cost”. So unless you live in Athens county, this part of the “stimulus” package works about as good as two wet cats in a bag.

    Stupid? Yes.

    Discriminating? Definitely.

    Pathetic? Of course.

    Typical? Sigh.

    1. If you have an opportunity to see the play “Wicked”, you absolutely must go. It is simply fantastic (wicked good)…..

    2. I used to work at a men’s health clinic called Medical Center For Men. I have many interesting stories from my days there. Earlier this week, I had a flashback about when myself and other staff got the first sign the clinic was going out of business and it was time to start working on the resume – they stopped buying toilet paper…..

    3. I went to the store a few weeks ago to buy a new tie. I had a really hard time finding one that I really liked. Because of the event I was attending, I decided I would buy a tie that I thought was gay friendly. Later during the event, I realized it wasn’t gay friendly, it was just plain gay…..

    4. This Just In: The award for the 80’s video with the two best singers with underbites goes to:
Peter Cetera and Amy Grant for “Next Time I Fall”…..

    5. New CDs I recently added to the collection (two from Neil Peart’s recommended list):

    * The Heavy Circles (featuring Edie Brickell)
    * Knowledge & Innocence – Terry Scott Taylor
    * Frank Sinatra – Live At The Sands
    * Hanson – The Walk
    * Patrick Ryan Clark – Translation
    * Bill Haley – Rock Around The Clock
    * Massive Attack – Blue Lines
    * Judas Priest – British Steel

    6. Did you see the recent SNL show with Tina Fey hosting? SNL is funny again – perhaps because the writers had 4 months to brainstorm new material?
